Upper
The top part of the shoe
The upper is the upper part of the shoe, the one that surrounds the foot. Its main function is to provide fit, ventilation and support, keeping the foot secure inside the shoe without limiting natural movement during use.
In current running shoes, the upper is usually made of engineered mesh, a technical fabric designed to offer lightness, flexibility and breathability. This type of material allows air to circulate inside the shoe, helping to keep the foot dry even in conditions that encourage sweat such as high temperatures.
Some shoes incorporate more advanced materials such as knit, jacquard mesh or fabrics reinforced with technical fibers, which improve wear resistance and fit to the foot.

Within the upper we find several important elements that influence comfort:
- Lacing system: offers good support during use.
- Tongue: distributes the pressure of the laces over the instep and improves comfort. In some models it is integrated into the upper to prevent movements.
- Lateral reinforcements: elements that help keep the foot centered on the midsole.
A good upper should offer fit, comfort and ventilation.
